I’d rather stick with vesktop thanks
Wow. Amazing! I use it in a browser when I need it then close the tab when I don’t, you know, like a reasonable person? I am not installing more Chromium to not only spy on me but literally also tell everyone what I am doing unless I go out of my way to opt out (the toggle will just turn back on whenever it feels like it).
I bet they did some dumb shit like subscribe every single QWERTY 101 key.
Wouldn’t want that malware on my machine. So sick of every online community default to the shithole that is Discord.
Wow, I can’t wait to never install it
I can’t imagine the venn diagram of people who still use discord and people who game on linux has that much of an overlap does it? Like cmon it’s got to be the worst possible of all the options. You’d be more secure sending a plaintext email to someone.
Most gaming communities are on Discord. I game on Linux, and we don’t use Discord in my friend group, but I am still in tens Discord servers. I don’t get to choose where these communities are. There are even several non-gaming-relating communities I am part of that primarily exist on Discord.
The thing is that everyone else is on discord. So you dont have a choice
I mean you do. I don’t use it. If someone wants to use it I say I don’t have it and make them use something else.
Most of my friends discord is my only way of communication lol
I also organize tournaments for a small community sometimes and I’m not getting all those people to install something else that does the same job but probably worse.
This works only if you do not have many internet friends. I also really don’t have an issue with discord usability wise and their ultimate implementation of age verification is practical even if I disagree with doing it at all (but it seems to be politically popular sadly).
“people who still use Discord” is virtually everyone in my experience
Maybe among gamers? I don’t think it’s all that ubiquitous outside of that.
Even buisnesses use it as alternative to Teams lol
I’m one of them lol. Hate discord but there is no choice if i wanna play with friends.
Are these friends who you know well? If so why can your entire friend group not move to a different solution together? Do they refuse to?
Discord is unfortunately still wildly popular, even amongst Linux users
The overlap in the venn diagram is far from a circle, but it’s bigger than you’d think
Discord is rolling out global…
Goddamnit, what bullshit are they doing now?!?!
shortcut support (e.g. Push to Talk) on Wayland for Linux users
Oh… Well we got good news for once
I’m so confused. I am on KDE Wayland and have been using push to talk for like a year now. What even is this?
The ability to use push to talk while Discord is not the focused window.
I know, it’s been working
It had been working for me until it somehow didn’t. Not quite sure why. I did had to setup KDE to allow global shortcuts for Discord but that no longer seems to be working for me.
Maybe it previously only kind of worked depending on setup? I remember I had trouble and I think I remember implementing a “fix” but at some point it stopped working for me.
From what I understand, what they’re doing now will work on all systems.
Still please don’t use it to host your source code. Or to communicate critical info.
Beat I can do is mod repo. For many mod creators.
God I hate it so much, you can’t find shit in these ones…
How do you even release a voice chat app without push-to-talk capability?
TIL Discord has voice chat
That only took a decade to get done. Good job!
To be fair, it wasn’t the fault of Discord this time. The Wayland developers took their time, because they couldn’t agree (until now).
The global shortcuts portal is four years old.
It wasn’t finished and final about one or two months before. They were discussing the global shortcuts portal for about 10 years, with different portals and revisions, and they just couldn’t agree on. Now its official and final recommendation. Some desktop environments used some draft versions, and everyone did it in a slightly different way, so that it wasn’t a real standard yet. And many other window managers or desktop environments didn’t even attempt it. Therefore many tools didn’t use the half baked portal and chaos everywhere.

That’s just complete made up nonsense.
Some desktop environments used some draft versions, and everyone did it in a slightly different way, so that it wasn’t a real standard yet.
That’s not how anything works. An API getting further refinements and improvements - almost exclusively in documentation - doesn’t make it “not final” or “not a real standard”.
And many other window managers or desktop environments didn’t even attempt it
Some niche WMs not suppporting an API doesn’t matter to most app developers.
I’d recommend Stoat because they won’t rape you for all the personal data they can.
Precisely, Stoat or fluxer
App looks very similar too. But friends, other devs and communities aren’t using it. Their privacy agreements seems to be much better than Discord, especially because their servers are located in Europe. But one should still understand this is not entirely private either. Note, I am not dunking on this service, just want to remember people to read privacy notices:

An alternative could also be Matrix, which at least is decentralized: https://matrix.org/
There’s also XMPP as an alternative. And Fluxer.
Matrix, XMPP, and (now) Fluxer all have federation between servers, though they all use different protocols. I know there’s a bridge between Matrix and XMPP too
I know of XMPP, but never looked closer. A quick research to find differences and similarities lead to a post / page from Luke Smith. Didn’t heard this name for a long time… https://lukesmith.xyz/articles/matrix-vs-xmpp/
True story: one weekend I convinced my friends and family to try Matrix instead, and within the first day of using it someone spammed them with CSAM. That was the last of trying Matrix.
This is horrible, but its not like a Matrix only issue. I used Matrix a few times, but stopped because most people aren’t there. Never had an issue like CSAM or similar. In example someone got hacked by an exploit in the Linux Kernel. Does that mean everyone should stop using Linux?
I just simply can’t and won’t ask friends and family to try it again after they experienced that.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand your situation. It’s also embarrassing and traumatic, especially because you had experienced it yourself. I just meant this in general, that people should not be afraid of trying Matrix, because YOU had these terrible experience.
That was a coordinated attack that happened for a brief period. As a guy who runs his own home server, trust me when I say it was a nightmare for all involved.
That’s over, now that there are strong protections in place to prevent those sorts of attacks.
Also, if you’re trying to just use something between friends and family you can always turn off federation (E.g. Have matrix act just like the alternatives where you have one network and are only communicating with local accounts).
So glad I don’t have to wake up every morning and purge all remote media from the prior evening 😂
Yeah, it’s worth remembering that something similar happened on the threadiverse a while back. I think there is now some automated detection and removal enabled for most significant instances.
I’d recommend Fluxer over Stoat. Seems to be gaining more users and traction in a fraction of Stoat’s time.
I recommend Haven if your focus (!) is self hosting. Just a single container.
Chatto is also quite interesting (especially architecturally), but I dislike event sourcing without ability to technically prune old stuff. Also it’s closer to Slack than Discord.
Trying to get my friends to try Fluxer as well. 🫠 Maybe one day. I’m refusing discord though, so when they play with me they are forced to talk to me using Steam’s voice chat.
fluxer.lemmy.world is still returning a 404
then where’s stoat.sdf.org? 🤣
The lights are barely kept on for our Lemmy instance, I don’t expect a Stoat server anytime soon…
Then maybe they should take a massive bankloan🤣😂
discord and twitter…
If they enjoy discord, they are likely okay with Twitter. At best you would see Discord on Bluesky.
bluesky aka blue twitter

pizza and pineapple
Delicious.
Also chicken pizza with curry and banana. 😋
Can’t wait to see how this will result in another massive leak of personal data that they totally don’t retain.
What has this anything to do with leaking personal data? This is about the global shortcuts, that can be used while your operating system focus is on another application. This is a long standing issue on Wayland and just recently got solved I think. And Discord being one of the first to make use of this new Wayland “feature” is absurd (in a good way). So I don’t understand where you coming from with this statement.
What exactly do you want tell me with that? I should search for data leaks through a search engine? This does not address my point whatsoever. We are talking about global shortcuts protocol from Wayland here, has nothing to do with data leaks: https://flatpak.github.io/xdg-desktop-portal/docs/doc-org.freedesktop.portal.GlobalShortcuts.html
“What exactly do you want tell me with that? I should” click on those links?
I’m guessing their point was to do with the 1st word in the title of the thread.
But your link does not address my issue, you are talking about data leaks. But the global shortcuts on Wayland has nothing to do with Discord dataleaks that happened in the past. You are conflicting two different topics here. Click the link I provided (its not a search link, its an actual result) and read through to understand what global shortcuts are.
I’m not qualified to address your issue.
This has nothing to do with data leaks. Global shortcuts just mean that if you focus on a different application, then you can still control the application in background with shortcuts like Ctrl+1. That’s all. This changes nothing about data collection or data leaking.
I haven’t used discord for a couple of years. got an email yesterday informing me that unless I log in soon, my account will be deleted.
…oh no
I’m going to let them delete it, saves me having to
They keep your messages around if you account gets deleted. You have to use an alternative tool to delete them
Deleted my reddit account only to find my comments were still there. So I’m guessing Discord messages will still be there - I wonder what happens to servers with no admin.
They just stay up, but nobody has access to the controls anymore, the admin account shows as “Deleted User”. I know this, because the server my late friend hosted, is still up, even though their account got nuked couple years back.
I don’t want to leave “my” server in an unalterable state but at the same time I don’t want to encourage Discord use though my action (assuming I ever log in again, need to say how to contact me or say bye).
Why do something yourself when someone is more than willing to do it for you!
There’s no way these companies actually delete anything, ever. You can probably still get myspace pictures, and that company was before Facebook.
Meh, I already have a global mute shortcut. I have a keyboard shortcut for this script I found somewhere that toggles mic audio capture in ALSA.
mic_on=$(amixer get Capture | grep '\[on\]')if [ "$mic_on" = "" ] ; thenamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-added.ogaelseamixer set Capture toggle && paplay /usr/share/sounds/ocean/stereo/device-removed.ogafiThis will mute all applications. While a workaround for your setup, on other use cases it wouldn’t work if the user wants to mute a specific application only.
