Two psychiatrists in New Zealand can now prescribe MDMA in controlled clinical settings, built on trial results that have been challenged in the US.

Well I’ll be. I didn’t know there was pharmaceutical grade meth. I was going to suggest perhaps heroin as a better example, but apparently there’s a medical version of that too.

However, my experience is living in the US where schedule 1 drugs are at least blocked for medical use in the US. I don’t know if that extends to research or not.

So heroin and LSD are banned in the US where at least heroin is allowed in some places as diamorphine.

Cocaine and PCP are schedule 2 in the US, so they can be prescribed by doctors as well.

EDIT: I’m taking a little dramatic license here, but the above is strictly true.

Optometrists still use cocaine on toddlers, for example, since it’s helpful for opthamology, to determine whether they have eye problems.

Not in bag form, of course, but in eyedrops.

I had completely forgotten, but we studied cocaine in elementary school (again, ridiculous dramatic license): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_the_Stars

The way I understood it was that it was used as a numbing agent for the eye (-caine as in novacaine, lidocaine, cocaine) and that the only reason they used it was because nobody had found anything better.
