There are so many posts like this that are not worth the click, and it’s getting pretty annoying. I would love a rule that says release log dumping is prohibited. I’m all for it. 🙋‍♂️

That’s not what I’m asking here, I’m asking you what you find interesting about the release. :D

Sharing release log is not all about what “I” find as interesting. It is rather a notification to all other users of the software that a list of new features or big fixes are now available.

Not all of us are actively tracking release cycle of tools we use.

Each of us have our own use cases. What I might find trivial, another person who frequent this forum might find really helpful.

If you are not interested in the same software or not intended to use it or not using it currently, feel free to skip the post.

I disagree with everything, but let’s focus on the quote here. It’s not that simple! I might use the software, and I would be interested in a new release if it had something exciting. But a lot of releases do not.

The very fact that “software X version Y released!” is posted here signals to me that there’s something special that you are reacting to.

It’s clear to me that you are just release dumping here though. It contributes to the noise of the community, in my personal opinion. (And in my experience, lots of people agree.)

              I disagree with everything

That’s alright. You’re not forced any way to accept my opinion. And, the same applies to me as well.

but let’s focus on the quote here. It’s not that simple! I might use the software, and I would be interested in a new release if it had something exciting. But a lot of releases do not.

Each of us have our own use case that may not align all the time. For example, I’m quite interested in literally every release of Nextcloud, Firefox,Flatpak, Docker, Invidious, Redlib and Nvidia (partially) open source driver, based on my own use case. I might not have the same level of interest in other OSS products.

Level of “Interest in a software” is a subjective matter.

The very fact that “software X version Y released!” is posted here signals to me that there’s something special that you are reacting to.

The fact that an open source software, I’m interested in, is getting regular updates, and not getting abandoned is quite special to me.

It’s clear to me that you are just release dumping here though

              Again, Thanks for your opinion.

It contributes to the noise of the community, in my personal opinion.

Just to be clear, unless there is a specific rule enforced in this forum, your opinion and my opinion are equally valid.

(And in my experience, lots of people agree.)

You don’t need to drag other in, just to prove your argument. Your own opinion should be good enough.

Then the natural thing for you to do is to subscribe to releases of those things where they are announced, and not hope someone posts them here, right? And everyone who has the same interest should do the same, or perhaps subscribe to the communities of those specific software, if they’re fine with maybe missing a release announcement.

The fact that an open source software, I’m interested in, is getting regular updates, and not getting abandoned is quite special to me.

Okay, cool, then that’s a post right there. That’s a post. That might be an opinion you want to share. You see?

That’s the point I’m trying to make is that we are in a community of people here, and just dumping release logs becomes noise if there’s nothing to talk about.

“Just scroll past it and ignore it.” The thing with that is that it’s not a passive action! It’s something I have to do actively and consciously. And doing that so many times a day becomes annoying. And it makes me want to leave communities that otherwise have lots of interesting posts and people, if you disregard the release dumps.

Just to be clear, unless there is a specific rule enforced in this forum, your opinion and my opinion are equally valid.

To be perfectly clear, that’s exactly what I’m looking for. That’s the type of rule a lot of us wish was in place in these communities.

You don’t need to drag other in, just to prove your argument. Your own opinion should be good enough.

I’m not trying to “prove” my point. I’m trying to make you have more empathy and respect your surroundings by showing you a lot of people have the same feelings I have. 🤷‍♂️ These types of posts become exhausting if I want to continue to be in these communities.

So do with that information what you will. That’s all I’ll say on it. Remember, you didn’t do anything “wrong”, as you know. We’re just looking for a bit “more”—a reason to click, to interact, with you. If there’s no description in the post, there’s no motivation.

                Have a good one. 🤟

That’s what package managers are for, though. Or add the GitHub repo to your RSS reader if you want the details.

Lemmy is a social media, like others have mentioned in this thread I don’t mind this type of post nearly as much if the person posting adds their opinion/analysis/summary.
