I’ve been working on updating all my old software projects lately, and as part of that process I feed the source code into a LLM for review.

The amount of simple security errors, logic flaws, and code smells that it reveals is quite embarrassing.

This was all “good functional code” that’s been used internally for years. Clearly it worked well enough, but a simple pass through a LLM reviewer made it a lot more robust and secure.

It worked, about 6 years ago.

Then I found that it kept “accidentally” getting reset “somehow” and dumping me into New Reddit, how strange.

I had a MythTV system with an Athlon 700 cpu around 2005 as a DVR and somehow it was a ripping machine.

Using MythTV’s built in encoder it could rip a standard feature length DVD to about 800MB in about 45 minutes, so I’ve got plenty of 2000’s DVDs from the local video store on file still. The process was basically, watch movie via MythTVs interface, leave DVD in, select “encode” from the menu in MythTV, and about 45 minutes later, done.

A few years earlier I was putting bulk Looney Tunes cartoons onto VCD for my children, pretty much wore our DVD player out with those discs haha.

There was a good guide by Linuxbabe on building an email server from scratch with all the bits and pieces and antispam/email verification stuff you need to send mail to the big players, I used it a few years ago to do my server.

Yeah you also need a vps. Home addresses are pretty much all marked as spam generators these days, and most ISPs proactively block all the common inbound ports for mail servers.

I’ve worked in mines in the desert in South Australia where temps semi regularly hit 46-47 degrees.

It’s OK (ish) because the humidity is low. But you can drink a litre an hour all day (11+ hours) and not need to pee. All that water goes somewhere.

The underground workings are often more dangerous, with lower temperatures but higher humidity. Once wet bulb temps get above 34 degrees underground personnel need to retreat from the area and the only work that can be done there then is work to fix the ventilation.

There’s heat stress meters that measure wet and dry bulb temperatures and airflow, and can basically compute cooling power in watts. Not enough cooling power -> everyone out.

Are you doing chmod with the recursive option? You could list a few subfolders with “ls -la” and see who owns them and what permissions they have.

It’s also possible that your distribution mounts that drive with fixed permissions that override whatever you’re trying to set. Checking with “mount” and seeing what it spits out for the mount options for that device might give a clue.

Maaaate, your burger is shit. It’s a precariously stacked abomination that’s 8 inches tall, has two ruined patties and half a cup of smoky bbq sauce and melted cheese on it, and then you decided that what it really needed was enough chilli on it so that all you can taste is burning.

It looks like your drive is going offline randomly, or at least, when it warms up a little. All the IO errors look like various subsystems trying to write to something that’s not there anymore, which is why there’s nothing visible in the logs when you look later.

Could be the drive, could be the drive controller on the motherboard, could be just that your nvme drive just needs to be taken out of its slot and reseated, could be something weird in your BIOS setup that’s causing mayhem (bus timings, etc).

Personally I’d reseat your drive in its slot first and go from there.

I found with my QNAP NAS that even just sitting the case on a piece of styrofoam made it considerably quieter. A lot of vibration gets transmitted through the feet and whatever it sits on gets turned into a sounding board.

When they make a noise, turn UP your tv, just a little, so you can hear it over it. “Gee those renovations of theirs are a bit noisy, maybe I should put in a complaint.”

When they rattle the ceiling of their apartment, “Hey it must be time to vacuum, thanks for reminding me. I’ll do it now while you’re renovating and making noise so it doesn’t disturb you too much”.

“I hear that plants respond to music so I’m just going to leave some on for Ferris, my pot plant, while I go out shopping for a few hours this morning” - Not too loud, just loud enough for Ferris to enjoy it. If you hear a lot of thumping it must be just them taking the opportunity to renovate while you can’t hear them. I do hope they don’t damage their ceiling with all that thumping while you’re out, oh well.

All that activity on their part takes a lot of energy, your activities take very little. Which one do you think is going to end first?
