Holy crap they do. I just bumped into a bunch in technology. One guy told me Russia is a victim of "imperialist encirclement ". I was just commenting on a supposed laser weapon they may or may not have.
Which is in fact true, this is part of the US‘s pivot to Asia (since Obama). If you‘d care you could read about that stuff in their National Security Strategy papers, like the one from 2022 under Biden and from 2025 under Trump.
China is the main threat for western Capitalism, most importantly for the US Empire, as they are the currency monopoly, military bully and world hegemon. Russia as the strongest ally of China protects China‘s northern land mass border just by existing. For that it‘s important to balkanize Russia (the U.S. Helsinki Commission actually calls it „Decolonizing Russia: A Moral and Strategic Imperative“). This means to forcefully break the country up into smaller, more manageable regions.
Anyway, the general idea for Europe is to take care of Russia, so the US is able to focus on the indo-pacific, meaning China. It‘s the geo-strategic reality of the western block to remain (or regain) world dominance. It‘s capitalism in it‘s highest stage, imperialism.
This is a very common political analysis, not only shared by communists. It‘s just that most folks on lemmy are basing their political understanding on vibes and what western corporate media tells them. It‘s a choice to go beyond that.
TL;DR: “It’s only imperialism if the west does it!”
With that kind of quality commentary you could make a career as mod on MoL.
I fail to see how that makes it okay for Putin’s Russia to commit the atrocities it has, and continues to.
Even purely from the Russian POV, the repercussions of the economic damage being inflicted, the sheer number of working age men being ground to paste, will hold the country back for generations to come.
Beyond that, it gives the rest of the world justification to tighten the noose faster than ever.
To gain what exactly? Bearing in mind we’re into what, year 5? of the “3 day Special Military Operation”.
Curious, you are the very “folks on Lemmy (that) are basing their political understanding on vibes and what western corporate media tells them.”
If you’re unable to see, I’d suggest to do something against that. Maybe see a doctor, get a service dog or something.
I’m not sure what to tell you, that will satisfy you (there’s nothing, because you’re weird like that). You’re commenting that on a post about the Ukrainian president openly threatening to commit state terrorism, while you are also defending that by whatabouting with some weird ass “but they did it first” with questionable logic in another comment, merely reproducing western narratives.
I don’t think you understand the Russian POV, or that of any state outside the imperial core for that matter, because I don’t believe you even take these states seriously at all. All I see is chauvinism.
Beyond that, the rest of the world, outside of the western block, is not tightening any noose on Russia, quite the contrary, as they understand, that this is a proxy war and NATO is actively working to destroy the country for their own ambitions towards world domination since well over a decade now, using Ukraine as a battleground to do so.
Ya, I think I answered that with my previous comment. Maybe read it again and try to understand its contents.
Behold the tankie, who uses their big ol’ unpropagandized brain to cartwheel through a series of sociopolitical facts that sound like they’re relevant to the conversation but that if you think through for more than a few seconds, you realize are not actually saying anything
So, as you surely don’t want to end up not actually saying anything … what are the things that are facts, but also don’t mean anything and why do they not mean anything in the context of this conversation?
Ah, we’re on to Chapter 2 of the playbook. “Tell me where you think I’m wrong so I can regurgitate Daddy Marx gospel about why it’s actually the undeniable truth.”
In case you’re actually engaging in good faith, you (MLs, collectively) do this thing where because you see everything through the scientific lens of historical materialism, you can’t really acknowledge or refute differing philosophical interpretations of historical facts beyond dismissing them as bourgeoisie propaganda. Which like, you’re right a lot of the time! Particularly when it comes to western thought and mainstream interpretations of history. But then you have situations like this, where two sociopathic world powers are fighting each other via competing interpretations of history that both just serve to keep the respective ruling people in power. And it’s like you can’t let go of the idea that the power that most represents capitalism has to be the single villain in a good vs. evil fight in every conflict it gets into. So you state facts about the west’s villainy, which are true, but then you get angry when someone questions what the U.S. being a villain has to do with the villainy of the other party–do things like imply they’re stupid or didn’t read what you said, when really they just have a more nuanced understanding of the world than you do.
It does get very tiresome to see people reject decades of Cold War and post-Soviet collapse history, because the (US-backed) fascist dictator of Russia turned on his western handlers.
Okay, but have you considered that China Bad and we need to save all those good-hearted, liberty-loving, free-market Australians and Philippians and Taiwanese from the oppressive yoke of The Red Dragon?
Nonsense. I’m immune to propaganda because I’m smart.
Only you idiot tankies have been fooled.
That’s not how that works. A smart person would recognize that there are degrees of smartness and degrees of immunity. Even if we accept that smarter people are less susceptible to propaganda, there is no threshold of smartness that grants immunity to propaganda.
The most important service one can provide to a kind-of-smart person is to tell them when they’ve said something stupid. I’m happy to provide this service. Please rate 5 stars.
And I’m the smartest person, therefore I enjoy the maximum amount of immunity.
Just be smarter, idiot.
Impossible for me to say something stupid. It is actually stupid to suggest what I said wasn’t the Immaculate Truth as Delivered By God.
The only people who would suggest what I said wasn’t stupid are
a) Idiots
b) A vast and sinister conspiracy of malicious actors attempting to destroy me, everyone I hold dear, and my country.
