The groping of Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum on a downtown street shone a bright light on the gender violence women face every day, but the country’s political polarization has tarnished what under other circumstances would seem a natural moment for national solidarity, analysts say.
The president has tried to use the assault to send a clear message that such behavior is not acceptable. She has explained why she decided to press charges against the drunk man; she used her bully pulpit to pressure the remaining states that don’t have sexual harassment on the books as a crime; and she talked about the need to make it easier for women to report such crimes.
But almost immediately political opponents accused her of using the incident to distract from another burning issue in Mexico: political violence. The previous weekend, a popular mayor in the western state of Michoacan was gunned down in public during Day of the Dead festivities. Protests against the violence were happening in several cities in the state and Sheinbaum was under pressure to offer new solutions for the state’s persistent violence.
Violence against women is bad. Political violence is bad. These two are not mutually exclusive concepts.
All and any violence is bad. Except for violence against fascists.
That’s not violence, it’s self defence.
That shouldn’t even be classified as violence since it is a response to actions that are a direct threat to life.
How dare she?
Quite reasonably, that’s how. Sheinbaum on POINT, yet again.
Thing is, it reeks of being a setup, manufacture a scandal to distract and one of their most used cards is the misogynist one, whatever she or her government is criticised for is dismissed because “it’s because she is a woman so you attack her because you are sexist”.
You telling me someone managed to get that close in the middle of a crowd and the security did basically shit when she has never ever got close enough to anyone unless they are getting paid for it? Sorry, not buying it.
Also they are yelling “foul” because she has actively weakened and destroyed instances that should be protecting women, has berated and insulted civil organisations dedicated to the protection of women and is actively protecting pedophiles and rapists inside her own party, you can’t play that card if you are part of them.
Gender violence is political violence.
“A little fight at home.”
