Three Chinese taikonauts — Wang Jie, Chen Zhongrui and Chen Dong — will be extending their stay aboard China’s Tiangong space station after their return capsule was struck by a presumed piece of orbital debris on Wednesday.
Scary stuff. I am hoping this starts a serious discussion about the amount of orbital debris.
I mean the title isn’t click bait but I was like lucifer b satan on a candy braclet! Im imagining some astronaughts in capsule that is not able to re-enter or manuever enough to get back to the station. It says they are assessing so its not ruled out they can still use the capsule to return they just have to make sure its not compromised.
China creates more orbital debris than every other country combined, so they had this coming. If we’re going to experience Kessler syndrome, it’ll be because of them.
Good. Starlink, spy satellites, golden domes and dreams of rods from gods or nukes in space. Humanity can be grounded for a few decades.
Maybe we should do something about this debris… Just a thought.
Make more. Kessler syndrome would be a net positive for the world at this point.
Like…add a bunch more?
Let’s blow stuff up. That always fixes things.
The funny thing is that we have been doing a lot about it lately, most launch providers these days take care to ensure that their spent boosters reenter and satellite operators include provisions for moving them to graveyard orbits when they’re done.
Except China, who have continued to be rather sloppy when it comes to disposing of their boosters. Maybe this will give them a nudge.
Why would we do that when we can instead keep kicking the can until it’s the next generations problem?
It’s a time-honored tradition.
Wasn’t there a plane cockpit hit by a debris last week or so?
I think we are getting closer to being trapped on earth, suck it Elmo
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessler_syndromeGonna make astronomy real confusing for the next intelligent apex species.
(lifts head from primitive telescope) Hey Jo, what the fuck was that?
For the plane, they concluded it was a weather balloon, the company owning the balloon has made a statement in which they confirm that they lost a balloon at a time/location compatible with the incident, and will fully cooperate with investigator and also support new regulations to make sure it won’t happen again.
I think they worked out that was a weather balloon.
It’s always a weather balloon, or swamp gas, or Venus…
The last plane that was lost due to collision with Venus was wild!
I would have such an explosive shit that it would launch us back to earth
Thank you for your asshole’s service.
Finally trump is doing something with space force /s
