If everything is Cuba’s fault, then US can lift sanctions and they’ll continue to be failing. But they won’t do that because Cuba, while awful for speech rights, would be pretty good in most other aspects without the sanctions, and a successful socialist country isn’t allowed to exist.
It could be a financial thing still. It’s often a lot cheaper to fly to Europe than it is to take a domestic flight within Canada. So when faced with that choice, why not go overseas?

I live in Canada. I used to visit the States probably every other year. Then Trump was elected in 2016, and I stopped going. Then covid happened, so I figured I’d wait a bit longer. And now it’ll be another 3 years until I even consider it, but that largely depends on what happens in that time span. It’s not out of the question to just never visit again. There are plenty of other places in the world that I haven’t seen yet.

Every thread where you see “ceo of failing company gets $3M bonus” followed by “those workers could have used that” ignores the fact that there are so many employees that, divided evenly, it’s never more than $5, and frequently less than a dollar.
Yes, that’s technically better than nothing. And I agree the CEO doesn’t deserve a bonus if their company is failing. But focusing on this is missing the bigger picture of the lack of workers’ rights in America, and paints a target on the wrong people (CEOs instead of the government).
The system is designed in such a way that the residents get to make that decision. If they want to choose a non resident to represent them, they are allowed to do that.
In theory, an informed population should vote against this behaviour, but this particular riding will vote conservative until it kills them (which it’s likely to do).
Also, don’t concentrate people in a single place. It’s wrong to have a 4% population growth in Toronto and 0.5% elsewhere.
Is there a mechanism for anchoring immigrants in a specific location? My understanding is that our charter right of freedom of movement means that if everyone wants to go to Toronto, we can’t stop them once they’re in the country.

Since I wasn’t clear at all in my first comment: I’m referring to the fact that people can also get away with murder, as long as they’re driving a car at the time. Very rarely is it much more than a slap on the wrist, but it’s always significantly less than any other form of negligent homicide.

These contributions are so small. I wouldn’t mind if my own country increased their contributions to WHO by 20% to make up for this shortfall.
The biggest problem is that the WHO is a worldwide health organization. Without cooperation from the States, there could be huge health impacts elsewhere that could have been otherwise averted. Will other countries also pull out?

I think the generational shift was mostly that the previous generation just didn’t have or use computers at home, and suddenly they were everywhere. Most households just didn’t have a computer until the late 90s or early 00s. By then, floppies were on their way out, and burning CDs was all the rage.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s the correct “deal” to make - it’s the most overt declaration he can make to those who claim he wants to be dictator for life - I just think it’s probably a win/win for him.
If violent dictators can’t trust that you’re making a deal for peaceful resolution in good faith, then a lot of people are going to die to achieve that transition. If the only way out is death, they’re going to take as many people with them as possible. Is that worth it, just to kill one rich guy?
Peaceful transitions of power always involve compromises. Here, they agreed to spare his life in exchange for the future lives of countless citizens. If they didn’t want to agree to those conditions, they shouldn’t have made the deal. It just makes it harder for this situation to play out peacefully in the future.
