  • you should always voice your pain points to your manager. its your manager you gives you the authority to enforce your boundaries, and then you will have to continue to broadcast them (your boundaries) in those environments. having worked with medical staff, i understand they are challenging personalities. doctors are sometimes the worst people.

what you let happen to you becomes expected of you.

ask your manager if you can leave the immediate area ( or some other mitigation) for achieving your 30 minute break.

  • im a simple user

I don’t really like watching things

then this shit aint for you. just because you can do something doesnt mean you have to want to do it.

im old and have been doing this for almost 30 years. long before jellyfin; my kids never suffered commercials, never had to worry about some streaming service going up or down. they never had to care whether some source had the show they wanted. even when away from home, they were streaming my shit.

my very large curated collection may be less random than some iptv streams, but sure as fuck is more reliable, dependable, quality controlled and well, i dont even need to have fucking internet access for my shit (my library) to work for me.

  • i get it. i ran my own server for 15 years… and i stopped ~ 8 years ago. it was just too annoying between the spam filtering and -todays-new-security-enhancement-

email is the one service im happy to pay someone to do… from a bunker in switzerland. google not required.

…but you cant not use email and function in the technological world of today. email isnt about communication any longer. its about security and authentication.

  • the issue is that its very old. when running it, you will use a ton more electricity and be a lot slower than even a 5-8 year old unused retail box/workstation.

yes, you could throw ubuntu on there and it will work fine. then you could toss docker on there and play with some container apps for the kids maybe… like a mintecrafter server.

but, like i said, youd be better off digging a more recent workstation out of some garbage can and doing the same thing.

    e. ha, just checked that is a desktop/workstaton box…i thought you were talkin a real HP server… they have much larger power requirements. that little box you have there would be fine for a little mini server for light apps.

  • ha, k. i get it, and youre not wrong about gaining those skills.

I would think a good therapist would be able to provide exactly the kind of inter-human training needed to achieve what youre discussing. the tools exist, the people are out there. can any of those who really want that help afford it? prolly not.

we don’t have a ‘we need this thing to exist’ problem… we have a ‘no one wants to pay for that thing that already exists’ problem, as usual.

that said, you pointed out this causes a lot of societal problems though, and it seems many of the most vocal or problematic are those people (men) who dont think they are the problem at all. no amount draggin them to the help well is going to make them drink.
