So… yes?

If that shit indeed comes forward I’ll move to xfce then. It’s me the only one who I want to “compile” my desktop.

I mean, if it were for novelty and “cleverness” then it would be Plan-9 (or BeOS) the one who shoulda take over. At the end of the day both Linux.and Minix are both following the UNIX model which even at that time it already was “obsolete”. But reality is often more pragmatic

Last time someone tried making a feature-complete FOSS Instagram client, they stopped after a cease and desist from Meta.
Meta (Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram…) is the worst of the worst offenders for private instant messaging and humanity would be a little less miserable without it. I miss my pidgin days when one could use messenger, gtalk, jabber and whatnot and nobody gave a shit because “features” and so-called “privacy” wasn’t an excuse to rob your, ahem, privacy.
Sorry for the rant
Alas is not in F-Droid

Now that there is people jumping in to bash op as if they were the only in the wrong for failing to provide full technical details and using a defiant tone while doing it but not even mentioning they got replies 1000x worse and the bug was closed as “invalid” just because of that, let’s not skip over the fact there’s still a lot of toxicism in the Linux community and the mere fact that there is now a “r/LinuxUncensored” sub (TIL) speaks volumes.
I’ve felt sometimes here on Lemmy there are people who want to bring that toxicity and superiority complex over here. I hope they desist on that. The world is already too hostile. We can do better.
To be fair the left part also once was “Software, by corporation” (i.e. Photoshop CS and prior)
Knew about Linux back in 2006 with Ubuntu 5.10, it had Gnome 2 which at the moment was great.
But for some reason its devs decided they knew much more than their users about how to use a DE so they imposed a lot of groundbreaking changes so for a time (some months) I used Xfce and then moved to KDE like in 2009 or so (I think it was late 2008). At the time there was the KDE4 shitstorm but imho it was nothing compared to what Gnome 3 did (i.e. Plasma was way more customizable than now, there was stuff that never came back like window tabs and one-wallpaper-per-virtual-desktop things…).
All in all nowadays KDE is for me much more stable and suited to my day-to-day needs than Gnome 2, not to even speak about what Gnome 3 turned out to be.
However I reckon today’s Gnome has evolved a lot since its 3.x days and I suppose it should be amazing for the people who happen to like its way to do things, it just happens it’s not for me.
I don’t know if there’s such thing but i wish there was a foss alternative for street view too
Is it acrylics? I did it once with my laptop when I was at uni, but with use it started to peel off. You’d want to add some protection layer of any sort if you want it to last if it’s indeed acrylics.

Should open source software like Blender, GIMP or Inkscape also sponsor festivals?
Or… the other way around…?

On the specific case of Firefox - its code not only is huge complex but also a bit of a mess. There were efforts many years ago to do a Qt port of Firefox but they found out it was really hard to decouple the Gecko engine from the UI part. That’s why you can’t find 3rd party “frontends” using the Gecko engine, but only what would be Firefox forks with extra steps, cosmetic changes and so on, but nothing really substantial - big changes in Firefox would break them.
One of the reasons I’m really looking forward to Servo development is for this reason.
Kinda wishing this was available for kdenlive, but I can’t tell if there’s an issue report for it already
Just downloaded it and opened it and the first thing it does is to ask me for a “notes folder” with .md files, which I don’t have. I just wanted to try it by writing notes.
This morning my unemployed ass saw a post on Reddit of someone talking about leaving indeed/linkedin and an “open source ATS job aggregator and application tracking app” they’re developing (this is the GitHub repo in question, btw). Maybe you or that person in your cooperative can find it useful.

I can’t speak for the Debian case since I didn’t knew about it much but afaik on the Gentoo side it was because its hard dependency on Bashisms (and Bash as a whole) so it needed many hacks and stuff to get around of those and make it work on the BSDs.
That it didn’t work because “it is just too alien to Linux” isn’t quite true because it did work, it’s just that it needed too much work to keep it going with Portage as it was (and is).
At that time systemd didn’t even exist so no, it wasn’t because of systemd.

I so wish Gentoo/BSD was a thing once again.

It might have a better UX than LaTeX but by design it also has the same double-edge sword feature - if you want or need to do something that is not covered by the default styles you have to rely on 3rd party plugins. That’s just fine for academic papers and such but not when you need a custom style.
Imho ConTeXt still is the king on that side. Though I wish it had the same development pace and documentation as LaTeX’s - or at least as Typst’s
Don’t know how to argue this but all of this “run this bloated non-posix non-standard installer script” projects that are coming out this days smell like ai slop to me. Ask them why they don’t provide a standard ./configure script (or a CMake script like in this case) like any decent human being will do and you’ll get some bs answers.
I don’t have proof but also I don’t have doubt.
