  • I think the point of the draft “thought experiment” they were proposing was to stop people from starting these wars and conflicts if they had a personal stake in it.

There’s this NPR episode I heard where they said that the codes to the nuke should be in someone’s heart and that person carries a suitcase with a knife. To get the nuke, the president should plunge the knife into that man to do it. It’s absolutely horrific and bloody but to kill many from afar you should at least be able to do one up close. I think that the person that recommended it said he’d be the first volunteer and would love that job. He’d make best friends with the president and get to know their kids, just to make the decision absolutely impossible.

I’d like to think that’s what they were getting at? Your response to the thought experiment seemed confusing at first but I think what you’re getting is that they’d just send the kids to safe areas of the war, rather than anything real anyways, right? which makes sense … politicians would weasel to get their own skin out. I’m not 100% sure why that’d lead to a draft? Do you mean in retribution they’d take it out on others and protect their own?

    Anywho, from another Canadian. ✌️

  • I’m not the guy replying and I agree with you “to a degree”. Although I got burned out listening to the “other side” for years. I don’t even really listen to “my side” … or at least I don’t think. The right-wing manosphere loves culture wars and complain about people starting culture wars so much to me it’s tiring to listen.

I do admire your ability to go through it. I think I probably would have kept listening if the “other side” wasn’t in charge of so much and reeking havoc.

I remember someone asking about Jon Stewart and The Daily Show during the Bill Clinton administration if he could keep doing his comedy if times were bad. He said something to the affect of, it works better when times are good. Which always struck me as funny because he flourished even moreso afterwards and was then accused on loving the bad times so much because he profits from it by lazy journalists. Anyways, I ramble a lot >_>.

Due to some recommendations I am using Bazzite.

I thought it was a bit of a locked down OS due to what I was used to. I realized that’s because of what it’s built on top of on? Like you should be using distrobox to boot up different terminals to install packages and stuff. It took me a little while to get used to it and I quite enjoy it. Although I suck getting wezterm to have a shortcut that will detect custom colours when booting into my specific container.

POP OS has been pretty good for me as well. Overall, quite happy with my Linux experience.

  • Thanks to this one comment alone I stayed up a few hours last night to switch to Bazzite.

I had a few oddities with Pop OS and I wanted to turn off the fans and do stuff. The fact that Bazzite had it all rolled in is impressive. The keyboard worked immediately. I don’t think I read the instructions well enough but I figured out I was supposed to use bazzite as the pw to get in.

This is what I think I was looking for, at least from what I see so far!

    Thanks so much!

  • hmm, I still think I want to use my laptop for media and gaming and general stuff … I’m leaving next week so I may try a safer OS in the mean time. I think when I get back I definitely want to delve deeper into Bazzite. I think I wanna see if Bazzite would be a good match for my friend. He was thinking about an XBOX Asus ROG Ally X and I was saying that it’s quite pricey if you’re not going to use the handheld component. He said he just wanted a console-like experience so he can just turn it on and play and that he has a Mac for his other stuff. I’m reading the Bazzite github repo and it says: “Directly boots to Game mode matching SteamOS’s behavior.” for the Home Theatre PCs which is what seems to match for him.

  • Pika OS is looking pretty good. The website is saying all the things that I like!

The laptop has an RTX 4000 card so it looks like I’ll need the specific OS, but I think it was the same as Pop OS. I had to download a specific Nvidia distro version as well, so it’s very similar here. I’ll give it a spin shortly!
