I’m not judging anyone for not knowing the risks of algorithmic news, and I get how we got there. Journalism as a whole changed by it, so many news articles are engagement bait now. It’s becoming so hard to find uplifting news, that’s why I liked reddit and now lemmy too. People make a genuine effort to find uplifting news.
Diversification has always been the answer, proven by a second uprising of RSS.
I’m so incredibly proud of my government for using SolidPods to store citizen data. Something our northern neighbours should’ve done too apparently. That’s a scary article.
GDPR should prevent any tomfoolery, but if I was dutch I’d be pretty scared atm.

I agree, and that fact scares me tbh. But that’s more of a privacy concern with social media and less an adventage of RSS. Some RSS feeds do require you to click through for the full article, having another opportunity for tracking.
RSS feeds are a way to aggregate articles from many websites all in one feed. There’s no inherite privacy advantages. The main advantage is you can group many RSS feeds into your preferred categories and see a list of all the articles of your interests, without having to visit each website separately.
You can start here, a currated list of many feeds. I use Feeder on android and FreshRSS as a self-hosted curration tool but also to connect RSS feeds to services of mine.
Mine is using about 100GB atm, ran it on a 40GB to start but the data management was a bit much. Good luck though!
I’ve been using OVH without issues. How big is your drive space though? Lemmy uses quite a bit. Federation can take some time too.
It doesn’t have to know, the processed data that is regulated is about much more than just our participation in the Fediverse. Like ip’s, analytical, usage data and so on, things that are only shared between you and your lemmy instance. That’s what’s awesome about self hosting.
Participation could fall under the same laws as email, all the other data is yours. And as another user suggested, self hosting your instance and currating federation is probably fine. I’m not a lawyer this is not legal advice
It’s a regulation thing I would assume, processing under age data is heavily regulated everywhere so any social media that goes for 13+ probably has a team of lawyers.
I hate how often Discord is mentioned as a viable alternative, how that is even remotely close to a link-aggregator fora is beyond me.

Religion to me has always seemed as a way to create order in a seemingly orderless world, rationality set aside. I like philosophy for this reason, although it can be very pretentious.
Religion, mythology and probably anything mystical. It’s very easy why people believe in them, they’re so alluring and genuinely wish they had truth to them. Unfortunately the only truth to be found is ancient wisdom, and even that can be very iffy sometimes.
I guess the equivalent would be creating a new account on reddit.com

I’m kidding, because I felt the same when I was new here. Account age and karma are treated like valuable currency over there, glad that’s not a thing on lemmy, and for good reason.
Yeah I get it, my age old account is now abandoned because Reddit decided to fuck up. Guess what instance I hopped to to view Reddit? None, because Reddit is not decentralized.
Sure, and nothing prevents you from signing up to multiple of them.
For sure, I’ve always said that for the most part it doesn’t really matter. Make an account on anyone of them and if you don’t align with that instance in the long run you can just hop to a different one.
