I don’t know about the mechanics, but a lot of activism is more aimed at making a point rather than causing extensive damage. They made their point here and made headlines, which sounds pretty effective as far as activism goes.

At this point and with how much support Israel has received from the international community, no government is willing to admit how complicit they’ve been in this genocide, even if it is as clear as your comment/the medic incident makes it, so they’re just going to keep pretending.

I don’t understand why this comment is so low. As an immigrant myself who migrated when I was very young, the answer of internalized racism is very obvious to me. It took me almost 25 years to fully open my eyes to the racist beliefs I had internalized growing up, and even being aware of it now, it takes an awful lot of self-work to unlearn certain things.

There’s a video around of a drone covering the length of the group, it took it like a minute of flying straight through to cover (what that video said) was around 150,000 people. Wonderful to see.

Optimistic of them to assume that Israel won’t continue with other forms of genocide before March 2026. Their plan is to wipe out the population much sooner than that. Those of us outside of the US need to keep putting pressure on our politicians.

That’s interesting. When I was growing up I was told it had to meet all 5, and the reason for Canada’s colonialism not being considered genocide is that it didn’t meet all 5.

Of course we all know what Canada did to indigenous folks was actually a genocide but the government would still tell you otherwise. Either way they meet at least 4 of these. Whether you want to say it was deliberate or not I guess is up for debate but…

I’m not saying it’s the right thing to do but a big difference here is that up until VERY recently, the US did not have an official language, so for them to say “English only” would be a bit more offensive than for Japan (whose official language is Japanese) to say “japanese only”.

Additionally, the US is on colonized land, so English wouldn’t be the native language of the land. Japan on the other hand has existed for close to 40,000 years and was not colonized in the same way (Not saying that the Japanese historically haven’t been colonizers, but the island of Japan is generally not). I genuinely wouldn’t even be mad about it if someone in Manitoba made a rule that was like “Ojibwe only”.

But also to your point, yeah the US did recently pick an official language AND launch an “English only” campaign for a whole profession and it is extremely fucked up.

I am from the Gulf coast and have always said, when describing where I’m from “the Gulf coast”, but since all this bullshit I’ve been making it a point to say I’m from “the Gulf of Mexico”, cause fuck that guy. But also it’s fucking dumb, it’s all just sea, who gives a shit. Next thing you know he’ll be saying the “pacific of America”

I’ve understood it more as buying the politicians out. That’s the only thing that could really be “for sale”, and thankfully we picked one that isn’t (at least not in this context).

I’m Canadian and not shading on diversity at all but just because we have a lot of different cultures mixing together doesn’t make anyone ‘better’. There are reasons we are as diverse as we are, and most of those reasons are historically very, very bad.

They haven’t released his diagnosis but he had been struggling with paranoia and delusions prior. Also a long history of mental health/police contact and very recent calls from his family to hospital to get him help. This was entirely preventable if the mental health supports were adequately available.
