God isn’t real, it’s just a story made up by humans who didn’t know how the world worked and took a stab in the dark at the cause. It is voluntarily believed by billions of people on earth because of countless of different reasons. Some of those are worthy of scorn and derision; mad men using religion to control those around them, those who use their religion to bolster their hatred and bigotry. But for every one of those, there are many more people who use their religion to love and build community, support those in need, and generally share the love.
There, this comment is blasphemous but in a that’s way inoffensive towards any one people or religion. I’ll report myself and you’ll see if your interesting interpretation is true, or if the rule is about stopping bigotry.
Don’t they know your form of bigotry is based in logic and reason? So much different than all those other bigotries that only have… wait… oh no! It looks they all rationalize themselves using logic and reason. But that can’t be, don’t they know that your bigotry is the only correct one? Surely… no… yeah… yep, it looks like there’s no fundamental difference between yours and anyone else’s. Religious extremists suck, regardless of the religion. This isn’t exceptional of Islam, my guy. Christian extremists do shit just as bad all the time.
After the Civil rights and anti-Vietnam protests of the 60s and 70s, public policy changed to quietly hoover up all of the hippies via the drug war and cut funding for universities and colleges. That, plus McCarthyism and the oil shortage lead to Boomers being one of the most conservative generations in American history. They, along with the government, pushed this idea of freedom through self-reliance and hard work. Those were always the undercurrent of America’s politics, but now there were basically no dissenting voices (cause they were all in jail for possession or for being a commie).
The next generations of leftist voices were crushed by the heel of capitalism. Since college and university cost more, individuals participating either needed to already have money (thus be more likely to swallow the “individual effort” freedom narrative) or needed to take out loans (thus needed to keep their mouth shut, since student loans are “forever loans” that can’t be forgiven via bankruptcy and they needed employment to pay them back). High school and lower education was stripped of “commie” talking points, meaning the sole narrative taught to young people before college was “America is the best cause of our freedom” nonsense. Unions were taken during this time with “right to work” laws, handing more unchecked power to corporations.
Right now in America, there’s a resurgence of leftist voices, but these are students with no masters. We have to rebuild the organizations to support these efforts, but that takes time. In the interim, you’ll see mass protests break out from time to time when things get bad, but our lack of generational knowledge on how to utilize these efforts means they’ll come and go fairly quickly as individuals are unsure of what comes next. And before those protests can solidify around a single message or platform, mass media will come in to give them a shit one, or twist the actual one to lose public support. That’s why the George Floyd protests were big and loud, but didn’t really drive any consistent goals. The “defund” narrative was constructed around the movement before it could actually decide that was its goal, and that was too an extreme for position for the average American in that moment (think the Overton shifted on that, now), killing the momentum the movement was gaining.
Another thing is that the gov’t targets leaders of these movements and finds a way to put them in jail or kill them. Meaning being the face of the movement is basically guaranteed to get you killed or silenced. So none of these modern protests have true leaders (not single strong men, mind, but actual decision making bodies in general), making it hard to quickly organize messaging and actions. Putting them even more flat-footed for when the next moment arises.
Also, any popular protest in the US that doesn’t include rioting gets basically no air time. The George Floyd protests went on for months after the news stopped covering them. Minneapolis’ response to operation metro surge outlasted the operation, but you don’t hear about it being celebrated.
Understood. I wasn’t trying to convey that, but I can definitely see it in what I said. I was trying to say “hey, this isn’t just cause Americans are sick fucks. Any group can get here with the right conditions. Know that, understand it, and work to actively avoid it”
I will one hundred percent own that bringing up China made my comment xenophobic. It honestly completely derailed what I was attempting to convey.
The question now is, how do I point out to a group of people labeling something as evil, which is distancing language, that this is something that all humans are capable of? Not because humans are inherently evil or cruel, I don’t actually believe that, but because we can make systems that are uncaring and grind both victim and perpetrators to dust beneath them. That imagery of horrors should be viewed as a cautionary tale to every person on this planet about what we’re collectively capable of and need to work to stop. Not something to point at and go “that group bad” cause that’s simultaneously unhelpful and completely misses the lesson.
I’m having trouble parsing this. Looking at the paper (https://ojs.aaai.org/index.php/ICWSM/article/view/42688) it looks like they’re using the LLMs to determine if a video aligns with one of the three categories they were testing this behavior against (cooking, fitness, and sports betting). They decided to go with that rather than hashtag filtering because hashtag use on the platform isn’t moderated. So, unrelated hashtags can be used on a video, some don’t have hashtags, and none of it is standardized. Categorizing things is something that LLMs are pretty damn good at, actually. Mostly because we actually understand how they do that (localization in high-dimension vector DBs)
Like, they’re not using the LLM to interpret their results, man. This is a clear centaur, not a reverse-centaur. The tool is being used by those who understand it, not being made to make decisions that it has no business making.

Man, I can’t tell what you’re trying to say here. It sounds like you’re trying to bash others for lacking science literacy when you’re hating on Meta-analysis, an important research tool, because it takes less effort.
Yes, this doesn’t prove that testosterone doesn’t play a role in risk-taking behavior. But it does prove that testosterone alone isn’t a strong indicator of risk-taking behavior. Which is important to state, because as the paper states, lots of research has been starting with that as an assumption.
