I’m conflicted. I’m anti-AI due to distrust in capitalism and our pseudo-democratic plutocracies, the profit motive to replace the human workforce, the reckless criminal-incompetence of its implementation, and apparent stupidity of the average hairless primate in understanding that you can never trust a correlation engine… but it’s just a tool, and I’ve also found it incredibly useful in my limited and controlled usage; getting it to write small functions or blocks of code, then amending and composing them myself.

How do we determine what is “heavily written by ai”, and all the obvious slop factory bullshit, without banning strong projects who are just leveraging it for legitimate dev work; as a glorified autocomplete, test autofill, etc but still read and validate every line of code?

Like most people, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to find trustworthy projects amongst the see of amateur slop, but I think banning it out-right would likely result in many false positives, and ultimately be counter-productive.

As much as I don’t want to depend on metrics, I think a better approach would be to define a bunch of heuristics based on historically-competent projects. Things like defining an upper limit based on LoC vs commit time and number of devs, project age, etc. Ultimately I feel the industry should do what cybersecurity should be doing; moving to some sort of cryptograhically-verified social trust model where engineers/professionals have to build trust in the real world, and take turns in “vouching” for projects and code releases.

Yeah, and that’s generally fine if it isn’t critical infra that could be targeted by bad actors, and they don’t have wifi or uncontrolled interfaces. The risk and damage of someone pulling apart an ATM to get at a USB port is negligible.

The main problem with it is the longer things don’t get upgraded the less people know how to fix or service them, which adds extra friction and cost to change anything with each passing year. After 10-20 years of zero updates, major projects are required because the OS and software stack need a complete overhaul to make even the smallest software change, and the software becomes a major bottleneck to organizational change or operations.

Based on the fact they leveled the entire city and murdered tens of thousands of children, I’m guessing anyone who had a phone in the vicinity of another “hamas” phone at any point in time (e.g. the entire population).

The LHC was completed in 08. That chip was sold from 06 to 12. This means basically half the pc’s they bought ~15 years ago are still meeting their needs.

Honestly, this is the way it should be. The only reason most enterprises upgrade their computers is because Microslop, and all the other proprietary software they’ve allowed themselves to grow dependent on, require it; not because a 20 year old computer isn’t snappy on Debian, or isn’t powerful enough for email, docs, and browsing. The LHC requires supercomputers and server farms for primary operations. These pc’s are basically just thin clients to access those resources.

There are still a shocking amount of Windows XP and 7 systems in production, because the software stack doesn’t need to be updated. If those systems had been deployed on linux 20 years ago, they would still be fully capable of receiving security updates.

90+% of them absolutely have no fucking idea what the difference between a classical liberal or neoliberal is. Conservatives are closer to neoliberals than classical liberals. They don’t care though, because they’ve been indoctrinated with the mental illness of fascism.

People shouldn’t have to think about what companies are going to fuck them over or exploit them as they go about their daily lives. The modern world is far too complex. The government is supposed to protect the people from criminals and enemies, foreign and domestic, no matter what their organization or motives are.

As it stands, most of surveillance capitalism is criminal espionage — just a fascist/authoritarian invasion of privacy — and would be illegal if our political classes weren’t corrupt criminals themselves, pre-financed and pre-positioned by the oligarchs/plutocrats of the economic elite. The current clusterfuck is an illusion of “democracy” that is functionally-equivalent to capitalist dictatorship, where our governments actively collude with businesses to extract wealth from the population.

What I’m saying is that no appliance software should be surveilling you, period. None of the data brokers should exist. Most data collection and sharing that isn’t explicitly necessary to deliver a service should be illegal. People should be free to live in a world where the greatest concerns when buying a TV are the build quality, features, and UI. Not fucking covert malware or espionage. What is currently considered normal and acceptable is psychotic.

Now watch as “liberals” continue to do nothing to stop the fascist propaganda machines causing the spread of the mental illness, because they are bankrolled by the fascists in the corporate economic elite.

They’ll also continue sowing the seeds of fascism by colluding with the elite to extract wealth from the population. Buckle up. All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.

It’s not perplexing. The worst of humanity — the criminals, the psychopaths, the sociopaths, the pedophiles, the corrupt — are all attracted to positions of wealth and power.

Ethics and morality are complex/expensive. They can only exist in an environment of abundance. The only thing separating us from cavemen is education; the ability to document and transfer information across generations; the ability to produce excess resources than we need to survive. Self-sacrifice is basically rejecting those baser survival instincts of physical pleasure and worldly possessions for some ephemeral concept of “the greater good”. That’s what we need right now, but capitalism explicitly rewards the baser instinct of selfishness and greed with wealth and power, so the most greedy and selfish of humanity prevail.

It doesn’t matter than civilization was built on cooperation or collective effort, or that selfishness and greed are a regressive, unproductive, dead end that will doom us all. Selfishness and greed only need to prevail long enough to destroy the foundations of civilization, like a stable climate and agriculture. Once those are gone, abundance ends, and we’re back to focusing on our survival in hourly/daily increments.
