I love the fact that federation means we could have a grandma-focused instance that applies all my hypothetical filters by default. It’s possible… but there is currently no desire to become the front page of the internet. We’re a niche, and that just means we aren’t the place to try to advertise for the little guy.

Lemmy suffers from the same discoverability issue… so we aren’t exactly the best place to tell others about obscure websites. From the start we’ve inherited an open-source community that leans liberal, and aside one very large recent shift that means that the community also leans mostly Democrat.

What does that have to do with discoverability? Well, one look at a front page can clue you in. (gosh I hope these screenshots shrink in size for display)

IT, Politics, and Star Trek all over the front page of my instance. Possibly worse on others. Imagine if your 80 year old great-grandma landed on this page. All she knows is what Fox News says. Instant close on the website. Not even going to open one discussion. But let’s say she did open the one about the FBI director being missing:

Oh, new Chinese food place! Remote work isn’t working? Carrying your dog to pick up food? that’s silly! 2.7 million of wine! She must have really hated that job!

So what is my point? How can Lemmy increase it’s discoverability? I feel like community diversity would be the #1 concern. Well… one obvious action is to sanitize the front page of the popular instances. I’m going to assume that’s a highly unpopular opinion, because then it wouldn’t be Lemmy anymore. Maybe perhaps there is a different frontpage for logged out and logged in users? With politics being an opt-in for active sessions? Or maybe we should just post more cute cats.

What do you guys think? Am I completely wrong about community diversity? What changes would you make to Lemmy? It’s not an easy answer.

right right. Totally agree. The community here hurts it’s discoverability. My criticism is only in the way to the post was worded.

I had this big explanation, but I realized it’s not worth it. I already covered what I wanted to say.

Even if the post is true, it was the worst way to present it. It reads like trolling:

Call out people’s politics with grandiose rhetoric, not backing up any claims with links to evidence.

Declare the other side is unbiased.

I mean, Internet 101 would dictate you downvote and disengage. It’s not going to generate a discussion that would change minds or be constructive. Even now we’re not talking about small website discoverability, but instead downvotes.

And then they delete GOG installer assistance from their database if they aren’t being actively sold. Like, that’s the whole point of a GoG installer. Preservation for when it’s taken off a storefront!

Tried different hubs, of increasing power. Same thing.

How do you keep it properly powered? When I tried something similar, some drives would randomly vanish because the peak power demand exceeded the supply of the hub.

My 10.11 migration blew up because one of my directories didn’t have enough space for the migration.

The path /var/lib/jellyfin/data has insufficient free space. Required: at least 2GB.

It looked like the jellyfin service started after the package install, but it was stuck in a loop attempting migration.

I still remember guides saying to go into BIOS and disable Hyper-Threading or any additional cores if you wanted to play specific mid-2000 games. Then when that wasn’t going well, the guides had ways to select core affinity.

I specifically remember Unreal Tournament 3 that would crash with a “Negative Delta Time” error since the secondary thread could process a frame before the first thread and cause time to flow backwards. The more things change, the more they stay the same. haha

It’s a shame that both AMD and Nvidia chose to abandon the sub-$250 market. I think I’ve mentioned before that I searched and searched for an affordable video card, only to land on stuff that was generations behind. So I ended up with an A580. Only complaint I have so far is that LXDE absolutely hated the card and wouldn’t even boot in VESA compatible mode. But that’s more a complaint on Debian’s glacial pace than Intel.

I feel like there was an app from the ACLU or EFF that did exactly that. Locked the device and started recording on panic button combo, and if I am remembering correctly had the ability to auto-upload to a cloud in case of device seizure.

EDIT: Ah, ok I was confused. It was the ACLU Mobile Justice app which was cloud based, but it was shutdown just last month. They point to external entities having access to their database as the reason.

Any reason you avoided the official Raspberry Pi Imager software? You really can just configure a headless OS all before flashing the SD card. Choose RPi OS lite from the list, then set up your hostname, username, password, wireless and turn on SSH service. Then all you have to do after flashing is plug in power and SSH in. None of this display troubleshooting would be needed.

Two questions:

Do you have anything between the Pi and Display, like an HDMI switch? Sometimes the Pi incorrectly sets the display resolution if it can’t communicate with the display directly.

Did you use the Raspberry Pi Imager program? You can configure SSH and WiFi, before you even image to SD. It’s how I set up my headless stuff so I don’t have to futz with connecting displays.
