For dummies like me, is the +3.1% of the total or just the subtotal of Linux machines?
To put it less crazy, is that a more than doubling of Linux since last time or lower, but still respectable 3% growth of Linux machines?
One is amazing and a beautiful omen, other is cool.

Optics aren’t great and it’s not like he has qualified people helping but honestly, I still think I want Donald as far away from a problem as possible just so he can’t make it even worse.
Never seen the term apicalypse and just had to say it’s fantastic.
That was my fediverse cohort too.
it’s a more transparent and sensible moderation model?
Certainly more transparent with the modlog though, depending on the domain etc you might come across some interesting moderation (.ml is hilarious for this stuff.)
Regardless, welcome to the fediverse, hope it tickles your fancy!

“Are we going to negotiate these with your Supreme Court or…?”

My conservative uncle does this instinctively for community and strangers.
For strangers, he’s always the first to rush out and help folks.
I rember when we were at a lakefront cottage he’ll rent for the family to come visit and he saw folks struggling to get a boat out of increasingly bad weather and immediately loaded us into the truck to go help for the next hour.
He also seemingly knows the name of every employee he encounters. When he go to that cabin, he’ll bring bottles of wine to give to the check in folks, the cleaning staff (and a thing of cider for one person who years ago said they don’t like wine.) When we shop for the food for the weekend, it takes twice as long because he stops and has a conversation with seemingly everyone in the gigantic store and knows their names, their kids and they know him and what he’s been up to.
In a lot of ways, he’s a damned admirable man, even if I find his politics repellant.

The author also had a few great TED talks on the subject:

I dunno, I babysit my friends’ toddler and she has way more self awareness.

“Calls are being made on social media” - In other words, the same accounts that were already calling for boycotts are continuing to do so.
Talk is cheap, more so online.

Given that calling Israel a nazi state has become not uncommon, I’d say we’ve pretty much forgotten what Nazis are/were and it’s now just a perjorative for evil people/governments.

Really? That’s your actual response?
Honestly, if all your friends and friend groups are using safer and encrypted media, it probably means you just don’t have that many friends. (Which, hey, no judgement, some of my favourite folks only have a handful and damn do I feel priviliged to be among that small happy few!)

That’s… Not how friend groups work?
The most recent large thread has 21 ppl, all of whom presumably have their own sets of networks etc. It would be unreasonable to demand everyone else switch because of my superior taste and equally unreasonable to demand everyone message me separately about anything I might find relevant.

I need one for messenger to work and I have a set of friends who prefer to use messenger to coordinate.

Tarriftopia complaining about “protectionist and exclusionary policies that bully American companies out of the market” is amazing.

That’s bold!

I’d imagine they’d be doing it for the whole fediverse. I mean from their perspective, why not? The whole open nature, in my limited understanding, seems to make that easier.

the way people are passive about an worsening situation.
Yes. So to some, the worsening situation was back whenever the Voat exodus was.
To you, it’s now.
To others, there’s a barely perceptible difference. “Oh, I had to get a new app?”
Fascism is VERY different. There are clear signs, clear dangers and serious threats. Fascism requires people to act to save others. A social media website getting less good is vastly different. (Also, stopping it in the US was way easier than creating a new social media ecosystem, people just had to vote for the non sketchy party.)
Lots of countries want to pivot closer to the EU as a hedge against a mercurial America or authoritarian China…
I’m definitely a fan of closer ties though I’d be a little wary about fully joining an organization where decisions can be held up by a recalcitrant Orban or Le Pen.
