  • It’s like reality TV & soap operas in text form. You can somewhat easily spot the AI posts though, which are plentiful now. They all tend to have the same “professional” writing style and a high tendency to add mid sentence “quotes” and em dashes (—) which you need a numpad combo to actually write out manually - a casual write-up would just use the - symbols, if at all. LLMs also make a lot of logic errors that may pop up. Example from one of the currently highly upvoted posts:

He pulled out what looked like a box from a special jewelry store. My heart raced with excitement as I assumed it was a lovely bracelet or a special memento for our wedding day. But when he opened the box, I was absolutely stunned. Inside was a key to a house he supposedly bought for us. I was taken aback because I had no idea he was even looking for real estate. My first reaction was one of shock and confusion, as I thought it was a huge decision that we should have discussed together.

As I processed the moment, I realized the house wasn’t just any house—it was a fixer-upper on the outskirts of town. Now, I get that it can be a great investment, but this particular house needed a ton of work. I’m talking major renovations and repairs, and I honestly had no desire to live there.

Aside from the weird writing (Oh jolly! Expensive gifts! How exciting!), this lady somehow realized & identified this house, location and its state just by looking at some random key in that moment. Bonus frustration if you read through the comments who eat all of this shit up, assuming they aren’t also bots.

  • .sh files are shell scripts, they’re comparable to Windows batch files or newer powershell scripts. They can be useful for tools with lots of dependencies which they then download on their own, so you often see them when you want to install something like LLM tools from Github or whatever. They’re easy to put together and easy to edit, even for the user itself, unlike a precompiled installer.

  • Yeah, but Windows partitions are pretty easy to understand since you don’t have a bunch of different extra partitions and filesystems that also differ between distros. You typically just make a C partition, pray that its size will be enough for the next years, and then make a second one for all of your data. You don’t have to think about root and boot partitions, which filesystem to chose, which name to give, how and if you should encrypt which partition, etc. etc. It’s all much more streamlined and well documented. On Linux every distro kinda does its own thing, so you can’t even just quickly look shit up. And if you want to encrypt things, suddenly all the guides are invalid anyway. It’s just messy and obtuse.

  • Just throw some of the popular distros on your USB stick. Most of them have live bootable environments to play around in for a first glimpse. Figure out what desktop environment you like most and go from there as a starting point for an installation. Since it’s a system you don’t really need you can just freely experiment without being afraid to break things. Worst case is that you have to re-install, or swap to another distro. Fair warning though, some of those laptop components can be very exotic and may not have drivers, specifically things like network, Bluetooth or sometimes even audio chips. Highly depends on the laptop but be aware that there may be some things not running as smoothly as you may want.

  • They didn’t had to do the origins, but I think it’s more a result of them generally struggling with the development. The game has shortcomings everywhere, especially in its story. The whole intro with Jackie is just meh and you’re supposed to like him so that it is this big traumatic hit when he dies but I just did not care. Then they introduce this moronic unlikable character of Silverhand which guides you through the whole game in some inconsistent ways, and I could not care less about this asshole, especially since his character started to rub off on V. To think they only did this because Keanu Reeves suggested them that the character should have a bigger role and that the original story apparently looked very different… Not even starting on the last mission which I could not even bother doing because I already knew V finds an end there and you can then only load a previous save to keep playing the open world. So of course, not caring about the story, I did not care about that either.

Obviously I could not be bothered to buy the paid DLC that wasn’t supposed to exist either.

I did like having my own character creation though. I did like having the ability to roam an open world and buy things. But I would’ve preferred a game with less of an idiotic story, hell, drop the story and instead work on more open world content and features instead. Be a little more sandboxy and open ended instead of having me play the hero of my own story.

As for the Witcher… Don’t care. I never got into it. Got through most of the first game but the choices & character drama annoyed me and I could not get into Geralt either. Combat, monsters and story felt blegh so I just dropped it. Could not be arsed to pick it up again.
