The problem with batteries isn’t the storage or lifespan but the output voltage legacy devices use is abysmally small and better batteries need a lot of output reduction to keep them usable by devices which fix existing battery sizes. So the trade off is a form factor and voltage spec from the 70s used for modern electronics more advanced than the computer used to put people on the moon.

Part of the reason so much stuff is rechargeable is because getting bespoke power from internal custom batteries is so much easier to design around than having to work with 1.5v increments while finding space for huge cylinders.
