  • I’ve used Nobara since…38? I think? and not encountered any of those issues. Its been stable, easy to use, user friendly, and most importantly… absolutely flawless for gaming, without having to do any annoying shit like compiling my own version of STL to install it and stuff like that.

Honestly, in my experience its easier and more friendly than Ubuntu. . Which is saying a lot, since Ubuntu is basically the linux for new people.

Honestly, I only have one complaint slash negative thing to say about the my entire Nobara experience, and that is I wish the upgrading (Like going from 40 to 41) was more automatic, like it is with ubuntu where you just click yes and it gets to work… But that isnt to say upgrading is hard or obnoxious, GE puts out an almost idiotproof guide on how to do it each time a new iteration releases that you can copy the commands from and do it without issue.

  • I can install and play pretty much any single player game I want, even new releases, and I am confident I will be able to play it with no significant/noticable issue… and on the offchance there is one, it will most assuredly be fixed within a couple days with a proton update… and honestly its been like 2 years since that last happened to me.

The only time I even have to think about installing a game, and thus have to check protondb, is when I want to install an MMO or Multiplayer game…and a shocking amount of those work, too. Just not all of them, because of invasive anticheat.

  • Its not mainstream. probably never be mainstream… Just like 3d TVs.

    Its a rich mans hobby.

the only reason the quest is “cheap” in comparison is because its facebook and when it comes to facebook… you will always be the product. Its sold to you “cheap” compared to others, because they make that back and more on harvesting and selling the data they collect from you using it.

overwhelming majority of gamers use gaming to escape and relax. Jumping around a room exhausting yourself is kind of the antithesis to that.

  • Running an APU with a GPU isnt less complication.

    its more complication.

    Significantly more.

Cause now you are gonna have to balance the same work across less CPU power, you also now have to manage two GPUs, and switching between them, and hoping games run on the right GPU (which I bet you there will be many instances where they wont).

APUs are great for istuations where you cant have a dedicated GPU, like a handheld device, or a small formfactor device, where you can use the GPU part of the APU for media processing/playback and light gaming.

APUs are a waste of money if you including a dedicated GPU.

    1. I agree. I dont know what they’ve done behind the scenes, but it seems like every major update to the steam software makes it slower, less responsive, and a worse experience. I really wish we had the steam we had 5-6 years ago, performance wise. It was lightning fast compared to what we have today.

    2. Something like a DualSense 5 would solve that problem. I’m not saying buy a DS5, cause its pants on head stupid expensive, but a controller like a DS5 that has a built in touch pad that acts as a mouse in desktop mode definitely makes getting around and interacting easier.

    Exactly.

    Discord isnt a support platform.

Its not a development/project management platform

its not a customer service platform.

Everything you post to discord is hidden away from the greater internet. Its not indexed, archived, or searchable. and its really hurting a lot of projects as time goes on and more technical support information is segregated behind discord and not findable to the average person…

  • Thats pretty much my experience with every game I play anymore. Its just click and go.

The only extra step, is something you only have to do once upon fresh install of steam, and thats go into settings > Compatibility > Enable steam play for all games, and set the default proton to use for them to proton experimental.

after that every windows game you download will automatically use proton experimental and should just run right off the bat.

Its genuinely amazing how far proton has come just in this last year alone, and gaming on steam in general… and for that latter part, a lot of the progress is simply due to the gaming focus distros that have everything pre installed, configured, and setup ready to go.

  • Everything runs about as good or better than on windows.

That doesnt mean there arent games that run bad… but those games run bad because of something wrong with the game, and not because of running it on Linux or Windows. Cities Skylines 2 and Starfield being prime examples of games that run like ass, because they are ass, and not because of running it on Linux or proton. . . Just for full disclosures sake.

I will say that I run a gaming specific distro (I personally use nobara, but I’ve also heard good things about other gaming distros like bazzite) that takes care of a lot of the headache and has all the annoying shit setup and installed ready to go. It would definitely be more headache trying to get to the same point on, say, ubuntu.
