It’s more complex than that. A lot of the time the money mainly goes to foreigner companies. I know that happens here in Colombia, where Canadian companies get almost all profits for the extraction of esmeralds in Colombian soil.
Opposing to this in the remote regions where it is happening could get you killed, as said companies usually contract paramilitars to protect their interests, just like Coca-Cola did a few years ago.
The mining situation is very sad to me. Money mostly from international sources, pretending to be Canadian by headquartering their mining company in Canada due to lax reporting rules, to operate mines outside of the country so as not to be beholden to Canadian labour law, and human rights oversight.
I’m from Australia, arguably a “safer” and “better off” nation where it’s no different with the mining industry. They have captured our politicians, the media and the minds of the average person. Anyone who dares to speak against Australia’s mining industry has their life ruined, or ended.
