I can’t say they didn’t, but at least they have a track record of doing Rust rewrites from pre-LLM days. As a fan of Rust, I wish it weren’t a company like Discord getting the headlines for doing this type of thing.
It looks like it might be possible to target wasm (at least GPUI can), so hopefully Discord won’t kill their web client.
If I have to use it, I’d much rather run their software in a sandboxed environment like a web browser than install a program that can then do whatever it wants with my user data.
Well, if they kill the web client, they will lose tons of users. I am on the web client right now, since their app is not working - again. This has been a common occurence on multiple machines, with different operating systems… They really should rewrite that shit.
