Feels like its already that way. I got around my bans so I have 1 acct on another machine I never use. After I posted I went to check it out, naw not missing anything. Tons of reposts, AI slop, and what looks like bots trying to stir up engagement.

So nothing of value lost imo

reddit is like the majority of social media in that respect, if you do not go for a curated view (subscribed etc) it is complete trash (a reflection of society in general)

reddit still serves a purpose for me, but only for a few communities that do not exist (or do not exist well) here.

That was the reason to make the clandestine account was for the few hobby related subs that I like to keep tabs on. Otherwise you are 100% on, “All” is garbage.

I did on one of my old accounts block anyone w/ 500k post karma and all the huge subreddits and that made “All” ok. But this was in like 2018. There was also a curated list of all the spammers/cross posters/karma whores I added to the block list.

Pretty sure they prevent new accounts posts from showing up as often as others, or just straight up hide posts from new accounts these days. Especially if you signed up with proton mailz or in the web browser, vs linking your google play login to the app on a phone that’s not already flagged.

You have to try really hard to farm karma on new accounts and on my old account I could reply with simple one word response and still somehow get 4 upvotes. And I didn’t have followers or was a big figure people would remember the name of or anything. It feels like after a set time and a certain amount of karma you start showing up more.

I think they’re very insecure about ai coming in and ruining the training data they are trying to sell so they really put up lots of walls to ensure its “clean”

Back in the day you used to buy bulk emails that where leaked and many of then where throw aways and occasionally they had a reddit account attached to them. But google deletes inactive emails now, and all new gmail account are 2 step with required phone number. So I think we are just getting locked out now.

I post only on the specialized/my hobby subs which are very small. Never noticed my post no getting an upvote or real engagement. I highly doubt att AI knows jack shit about table top mini fig painting and how to wrench on a Samurai. The big subs I like to follow I just lurk in as they are usually toxic AF

But I see your point, I think they are going about it all wrong as they can easily ID bots. How often the post in a 24hr period\how fast they reply over time\IP sharing\etc. Somewhere in their plan the bots must have value, or did have value before the AI scrapping\training. My guess it was ad revenue which has been called out on that.

I did make that acct w/ a Proton and its been up for 3 months. If they nuke it I will just go back the forums. Old Skool.

I’m pretty much like you. I made a reddit account with proton about 6 months ago, but if this one gets closed, it’ll be the end of my story with Reddit. Seriously, it’s the peak of stupidity to target a huge number of people just because they use a certain type of email! I found out that some people made new accounts and opened them using a VPN, and their accounts were closed instantly! I really don’t understand how they think!

I use a VPN on the alt/clandestine acct, so far so good after a few months. But I only login maybe every 2 weeks to catch up on my hobby subs. Post almost nothing expect to my hobby subs.

I agree, not everyone wants to get a gmail acct or use a real acct like from work for obvious reasons. They keep shooting themselves in the foot and its almost no a surprise the stupid stunts they pull.

So does that mean you can no longer see Reddit responses when you are looking up something on a search engine? Cuz like that’s the main purpose of Reddit these days.

Yeah, I used to append “site:reddit.com” as a quick means of filtering out AI blog slop. But that was just a bandaid and it was becoming less and less effective with each day.

I use RedReader to lurk and still haven’t needed to log in yet. But I tried an old.reddit url and it refuses to show anything without a login now.

Such a disappointing outcome. I used to love Reddit and now I want it to be replaced more than anything.

But nothing else has the diversity of content.

I just use redlib for any niche subreddits that I still browse from time to time. Hopefully that remains a viable option after Reddit closes their doors.

Looks like it’s time for another visit to r/RedditAlternatives to help them jump ship.

I use redlib through the LibRedirect extension to view Reddit these days. My favorite instances are redlib catsarch com (it has great uptime) and r naa gg (I used this during the strange redlib outage a few days ago).

I remember a redlib fork developer mentioning the use of obscura to get around the block, though I’m not sure how they’ll scrape when reddit needs a login.

I self-host my own Redlib instance, its basically the only way I interact with Reddit these days. The other day they updated the site to break Redlib and I had to apply a fix someone made with AI to keep it working… later there was a human made fix it just took more time. It’s going to get harder and harder to maintain instances the more they lock down Reddit. But I guess if Nitter is still working people will keep Redlib working. Nitter has long been much more difficult to self-host. Time to start hoarding throw away accounts, I guess.

I do sometimes wonder if it does more damage in the long run keep the site usable for some people while Reddit enshitifies itself? I wish people would hurry up and migrate here, its only going to get worse.

Yeah, I bet that’s why they made the decision to require logins because the community that wanted to continue using reddit in ways they didn’t want them to could adapt to any other changes they made like within hours or minutes. They blocked the app API but their own website still needed a way to access posts and comments and that way could be hijacked by anything else that just pretended to be a normal user or a collection of normal users browsing normally.

Requiring a login won’t stop them. They will need to watermark comments per account in order to map sites that still get around it back to accounts to ban, though even that can be defeated by just using several accounts and comparing the comments to find out what the watermarks are and just strip them out entirely. Then just make sure the accounts that work together don’t do it in a consistent and detectable way and I don’t know how they would be able to respond to that.

Honestly, the thing that I think will kill Reddit at this point is an AI clone. Stack overflow has been overtaken by AI; it’s only a matter of time before a self-hosted AI Reddit with AI bots talking to each other becomes a reality. AI Reddit can scrape Google News for topics to post into its various AI subreddits. And self-hosted AI Reddit can’t ban you for upvoting the wrong thing. And besides, Reddit is filled with bots already, so why not go all the way? Very dystopian, yeah?

Cause reddit doesn’t ban the account, they are banning you, the user. So all alt accounts get flagged as “attempted ban avoidance”.

To circumvent this you have to do a bit of legwork to ensure the new account has nothing linked back to any other account to avoid getting flagged, and reddit logs a ton of your user data, so mostly it isn’t even worth the effort.

Nah. You just have to wait a bit. They detect it and ban you again if you create another account right away, but after a while they stop. Either it clears or they stop giving a shit.

Was banned over a year ago. I still cannot make a new account with getting flagged within a week even if I only stick to commenting on niche game subs. I know cause I just tried again a month or two ago to try and post some questions on the sub for Nivalis Nights when that came out. Reddit sitewide bans are for life and they do not delete the telemetry metrics they kept on you.

If I wanted a new reddit account, I’d have to use a different device on a different network to both create a new email and the new account itself to avoid the telemetry metrics that reddit logs and make sure to never log into that account from any device or network that was used with the banned account or else it gets flagged.

I give it three months until other websites start with the “login using Google, Facebook or Reddit”.
