Why would Russia use SAS veterans to train their troops? Russia has its own special forces, Spetsnaz. Spetsnaz would be more familiar with Russian weapons, tactics, and the type of war in Ukraine.
My guess would be that the more instructors you have the more troops you can properly train. It’s not enough to have couple of Spetznaz guys to train an army. You need a lot of them but you also need them actually fighting on the front.

I suspect the Spetznaz have either been found not as capable as once thought, or largely used up as a resource already
