This is only surprising if you didn’t know Netanyahu has been funding Hamas for decades…

But reporting in the New York Times has revealed that Netanyahu’s government was more hands-on about helping Hamas: they helped a Qatari diplomat bring suitcases of cash into Gaza, indirectly boosting the militant organization, according to the report.

The calculus — the Times reported on Sunday, citing Israeli officials, Netanyahu’s critics, and the man’s own reported statements — was to keep Hamas strong enough to counteract the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, allowing Netanyahu to avoid a two-state peace solution and keep both sides weak.

He didn’t just let them attack, he’s the reason Hamas continued to exist in the first place. They don’t want to end Hamas, they want to use Hamas as an excuse to genocide Palestinians.

Not saying he isn’t a douche, but I do wonder with this and reports pre 9/11 to W, how many such warnings do they get regularly? If they get a bunch, it’s not really fair to go back and cherry pick the ones that happened to play out. I know in both cases there’s weird looking stuff where resources were moved away just before - but once again, how often do such shifts happen normally? Are we just picking stuff out of the noise? I really don’t know, and I doubt anyone here does.

Maybe Hamas being in league with Netanyahu will finally be the thing that makes the left turn on it.

Hamas is an umbrella term that the media and Israel uses to paint a wide spectrum of resistance groups that exist in Gaza as “evil extremist Muslims”, but the groups range from religious to secular, from conservative to anarchist.

Hamas itself also ranges from a militant organization to a public administrator of the Gaza strip.

Hamas was initially funded by Israel to exist as a counterfaction to the secular PLO (which had Jews, Christians, and Muslims).

As Hamas became the dominant group and administrative authority, they started getting funds from their (legal) enterprises globally. Hamas has an investing group in Turkey and Qatar. They would receive dividends from those finances as cash that would flow from Qatar to Israel to Gaza with the help of Bibi.

This helps Bibi with many things but at least two big ones are - it allows him to fear monger about “scary hamas” and get further support and extremist rhetoric in Israel. It also averted a full blown humanitarian crisis earlier than the current genocide which would have drawn international attention and poked holes in diplomatic meetings with Gulf states (now Abraham accords). The recent claimed cassus belli of Oct 7 is an excuse for massive expansion into the West Bank while “mowing the lawn” in Gaza for decades.

But I’m sure you knew all that before throwing out your quip.
