Mainstream politicians around Europe have expressed alarm after the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) swept to a historic state election victory in Germany, while nationalist figures cheered the result as a mandate for change.
While falling just short of an absolute majority, the AfD surged into first place in the Saxony-Anhalt state election on Sunday, exit polls showed, putting the far right within reach of power at the state level for the first time since the second world war.
Keep in mind that this party is under observation for their Nazi tendencies, and fulfils a good number of criteria for getting prohibited as a party, something that is really really hard in Germany.

The only upside is that they won in Saxony-Anhalt. Which is the most neglectable and backwater state in Germany, with only a very small fraction of Germany (about 2% of the population). Their win is mainly based on promises they simply cannot fulfill, so if they manage to form a government, they will disappoint their big time from day one. They might terminally fuck up Saxony-Anhalt, but that’ll be no big change - that state already is a lost case.
