Look up the gaokao test (link).
Basically this is the only test that matters in your whole student career. And if you don’t do better than millions of other kids on this test, it’s easier to go to university in another country than in China. It’s technically possible to retake it but very rare.

It’s bad enough that there’s usually an increase in the number of suicides when the results are released, from students taking their own lives because they didn’t so as well as hoped.
Sure, but why the US, there’s heaps of other countries with better education systems…
University level education in the US is actually very competitive, it’s everything below that that sucks.
Probably prestige. Despite the rivalry by the government, it hit different if you tell others you graduate from US college. Also they probably want to stay in US for work as well, a couple of year in college helps you adapt and have better chance.
