So sick of ‘ethnically cleansing’ (nothing personal), so sanitized, even genocide is usually out of context. How about we go back to ‘mass murderers’ and ‘war criminals’?

Except that is by definition what Israel is doing in Lebanon they are destroying the villages there and expelling the population especially the Muslim population and they are not hiding this in the slightest.

You seem to think “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” are euphemisms compared to “mass murder”, but it’s the other way around.

Not quite sure what ‘euphemisms compared to’ means here.

IMO “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” are categories of mass murder, “ethnic cleansing” being mass murder targeted to cultural background (with elements of displacement and cultural destruction making it more than just murder) , genocide to race. I would also suggest that the terms are very often misused in propagandist ways in mass media, leading to dilution and mutation of the meanings.

I merely argue that it’s the murder part that is the greatest harm, and the reasons why, while relevant, are secondary. I would like to put the focus back on the murder part, whether state sanctioned or not.

I like to think that a vast majority think killing people is wrong, while once you bring politics and reasons and abstractions into it people will distract themselves at that level from the actual killing and destruction that they would prefer not to face.

I had a moment of frustration and expressed it swiftly and poorly.

Doesn’t really encapsulate what is happening. Every war the US has been a part of since WWII has objectively made every single US politician and military member a mass murderer and war criminal. Every single one. Only a few were ever a genocidier or could claim ethnic cleansing.

It’s important to have that difference, especially when communicating outside of anti-imperialist bubbles, i.e. if you need to gain support for actual change amongst a populace who see members of the US military as ‘heroes’ or some other similar nonsense.

Makes sense I guess, not a USian myself, thankfully, and have less need of doublespeak. Personally I just think of them all as subcategories of ‘mass murderer’, including ‘legal’ wars and especially those who instigate them, although I concede the waters can be murky there.

No doublespeak what else would you call mass expulsions of a population and destruction of the villages to make room for settlements of your ethnicity.
