Greetings from Finland (literally the other side of the globe).
We went from a solid social-democratic government (and thank doG we had them during Covid, they managed it near perfectly) to an unholy coalition of neoliberals, conservatives and fascists, pardon me, far-right populists.
The results are palpable after a bit over 2 years now; esp. low and no income people are getting fucked over hard, misbehaving fascists make the news, while prestige projects cost a multitude of what was saved from the poor.
And of course they’re harping on immigration, too, although Finland really does not have that many to start with.
But tbh I have no idea how the new regime affects our own indigenous people.
Thankfully this is still a well functioning democratic state and you can’t just willy-nilly “executive order” things.
We don’t have the greatest controls here. A large amount of law passing has been passed ‘under urgency’ for the weakest of reasons - let’s you bypass most of the debate and public opinion. This government has no shame (not that a sense of propriety should be the control we count on to rein in political ambition and ideology… or possibly obligations to donors… ahem).
Yeah despite having lots of neoliberals (pro business basically) and other forms of *cough* conservatism, people still believe in the democratic process and regulations. It’s not getting better though, there’s a plague going 'round the globe…
