Groups of Madagascar soldiers joined thousands of protestors in the capital Saturday, AFP reporters said, after announcing they would refuse any orders to shoot demonstrators.
Fresh youth-led demonstrations in Antananarivo drew large crowds in one of the biggest gatherings since a protest movement erupted on the Indian Ocean island on September 25.
Hey US forces and police, are you seeing this?
Uphold your oath to the Constitution, protect and serve the First Amendment and civilians. Not authoritarians, not corporations.
instructions unclear, they’re now at the zoo attempting to deport a hippo, a lion, a zebra, and a giraffe.
here is a picture of these violent criminals after their apprehension.
Finally some good fucking news.
Makes you wonder about how most armies and soldiers fail to see what and who they are supposed to be in service of. It’s this part of the article that struck me the most…
“Let us join forces, military, gendarmes and police, and refuse to be paid to shoot our friends, our brothers and our sisters,” the soldiers at the base in Soanierana district said in a video posted on social media.
They called on soldiers at the airport to “prevent all aircraft from taking off” and those in other camps to “refuse orders to shoot your friends”.
“Close the gates and await our instructions,” they said. “Do not obey orders from your superiors. Point your weapons at those who order you to fire on your comrades-in-arms, because they will not take care of our families if we die.”
Bravo. These are true soldiers. Not the cowards holding guns in uniforms like in most places.
They will not take care of our families if we die.
This line needs to be echoed everywhere. Authoritarians will not take care of your families if you die.
Shame we can’t count on ours to do the same
They kinda did during the war on Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos. Just need them do the same on the domestic front this time.
What are you talking about? There absolutely was no mass refusal from the military to follow orders either in Vietnam or domestically when deployed against American protestors and the “silent majority” actually cheered them on.
There was organised opposition to the war on Vietnam in the armed forces, the G.I. movement being one of the more well known faces of it. The documentary Sir! No Sir! covers the basics. There’s a couple of full-length uploads on youtube and the internet archive.
I think they’re talking about “fragging,” or the practice by veteran units of killing green officers who gave orders likely to get people killed. I have no idea how common it was, or if it was even anything more than urban legend.
Fragging in Vietnam did happen. Wikipedia lists at least three incidents, one of which was attempted multiple times.
Is there a Madagascar Gen Z protest as well?
The article says it’s a “youth-led movement that was sparked by anger over power and water shortages and evolved into a broader anti-government movement.” Factions of the military have joined the protesters. The current president was appointed after the last military coup in 2009.
The UN has said that at least 22 people were killed in the first days of the protests that started on 25 September at the call of a youth-led movement called “Gen Z”.
The Gen Z protests are really gaining momentum. Check this map:
Gotta get some more green on that map! I’m thinking fascist-occupied Italy would be a great place to start, given what happened there almost exactly a century ago…
And the US and Russia, of course, but those are both almost too obvious to be worth mentioning and too entrenched to happen anywhere near as soon as we’d like…
Soon. But russia will just end in civil war, putler will never give up power without killing everyone.
I like your thinking, from now on i identify as Gen Z, i’ve had enough far-right bullshit.
same
Now they need to go shoot the people who issued the orders. Happy endings all around.
