Vice had a short documentary segment on Cherán, which kicked out their corrupt police, a cartel and outlawed political parties, and now their government is elected by show of hands. They had an interview with one of the candidates who used to work in the university, who said they actually didn’t want to be elected because it was a massive cut to their salary, but it’s the will of the people and it looked like they would be the favorite candidate.
