He resigned when this guy won his election, because his entire purpose for running was to challenge Starmer for leadership.
More to the point, Starmer knew that, now that Burnham had become an MP, Burnham would win in a leadership contest. Nobody at this point, besides a few hangers-on, supported Starmer anymore.
